'Helvetica with wings' is not going to produce a better typeface or help you develop your skills as a type designer. You should avoid basing your design on the outline of an existing typeface. This can be a useful practice exercise, but because handwriting is so individual. You might decide to start by digitising your own handwriting. As its name suggests, variable fonts allow type designers to personalise their letters, essentially enabling one font to act like multiple fonts.
